Slate Rock & Gravel Company (aka Bedrock Quarry & Gravel Company, Bedrock Rock Quarry, Rockhead & Quarry Cave Construction Company, Slate Sand & Gravel Co and Slate & Co) is a quarry pit mine and construction company situated in the modern stone age city of Bedrock and a corporate cornerstone of that ancient world. It is one of the main staples of the 1960 animated series The Flintstones.

Overview[]

Slate Rock & Gravel

The Slate Rock & Gravel Company

The Slate Rock & Gravel Company is a quarry pit mining and construction company that serves as the main supplier of stones, boulders, rocks, pebbles and granite used in all stone age housing and building projects, with Slate & Co supplying ore to not just Bedrock but even locations as far as Rock Vegas.

Slate & Co Quarry

One of Slate & Co's many quarries

The company regularly harvests its mineral goods from its many quarry pits all over the borders and canyons of bedrock, having a quarry around almost every corner. The company employees many of Bedrock's citizens, maintaining the economy of the city as well as maintaining the quality of its buildings.

Slate & Company will revolutionize the building industry by providing simple, low-cost, modular housing.

Slate & Co 2 million years later

Slate & Co remained an active corporate force for over two-million years

The endurance of the Slate Rock & Gravel Company's buildings would only be outmatched by the company's own resilience, which would prove to be its greatest strength, as it would not only survive past the stone age but for countless ages, still in business two-million years later as a major conglomerate under the ownership of George Slate the Eighty-Thousandth.

Although Slate & Co is one of the early pioneers of the quarry business in the modern stone age, copycat competitors arose to challenge Slate's enterprise, such as Turk Tarpit's Company and the Pebble Co. Rock & Gravel which may force the company to lower their prices to compete with competitors.

Presidents[]

Mr. George Slate[]

President of Slate & Co, Mr. George Slate

Mr. George Slate is the founder and president of Slate Rock and Gravel Company. A financially savvy go-getter since childhood, little Slate always knew how to turn a profit with all manner of small business ventures from lemonade stands to ticket booths. He would eventually achieve his goal in life when he founded the Slate Rock & Gravel Company, Bedrock's premier source of stone and gravel for all of its construction needs, allowing Slate to reach the top in the ancient world.

George & Eddie Slate

As stated by his employees, Slate is a temperamental and overbearing cheapskate who will look for any reason to avoid raising the salaries of his workers and will usually change his mind on the rare occasion that he does approve one which only comes every 5 years, however he does have his rare moments of kindness and is more than willing to help his employees should they need financial support for their children after some convincing. Slate's descendants would continue to run the company for generations to come, all the way up to his identical descendant, George Slate the Eighty-Thousandth who would prove to be even more cheap and demanding than his ancestor.

For some reason, Mr. Slate's first name is constantly changing, ranging from Sylvester, Seymour, Nate or even Oscar, and even his last name was briefly Rockhead, Boulder and even Granite on separate occasions.

Mr. J.J. Granite[]

Mr. Granite

Mr. J.J. Granite, occasional president of the Bedrock Rock Quarry

Mr. J.J. Granite was the head of the company early on (in which he was also known as Mr. Slate at times) and served as its regular supervisor, president, vice-president, foreman or general manager during the run of The Flintstones comic strips. Notably less temperamental and kinder but half the height of Slate himself, Granite was usually more relaxed than Slate but usually ended up finding himself taken advantage of by his employees more often than not.

As he has never appeared alongside Slate himself and have even shared names, the duo may actually be one and the same or Granite may hold another important position within the company.

Board of Directors[]

Slate & Co Board of Directors

Mr. Chairman and the Slate & Co Board of Directors

The Slate & Co Board of Directors are a strict and overbearing bunch of executives led by Mr. Chairman who have little tolerance for their president and founder, with the chairman in particular treating Slate as an underling. The Board are also a fastidious and efficient bunch who prefer to have quick meals, usually settling for a single carrot. They also value their workers far more than Slate himself. However the 1994 film presents the directors as far more amicable and subservient to Slate's will.

Dinosaurs and other primitive large animals were tamed and used as heavy equipment for digging out ore, delivering cargo and construction projects, and smaller animals were used as appliances. Although they were obedient, they were in fact intelligent and would often complain about the treatment they received from their cavemen operators.
