The Longhorn Saloon was a western bar featured in the 1958 comic book adaptation of the 1940 western film The Fargo Kid, having first appeared in the comic's third issue in the story "Iron Marshal".
Overview[]
The Longhorn Saloon is a traditional western saloon in the desert town of Vineyard that specialized in both serving drinks and making tailor-made cigarettes which were quite popular with the locals. The saloon was a simple green building that stood near the entrance to town and bared no notable signage, and like many saloons, it had been the sight of brawls and a shootout.
History[]

The Iron Marshall passing the saloon as he enters Vineyard for the first time
When the town of Vineyard became the hideout for the notorious bandit Al Haddon and his gang, this naturally drew the attention of the infamous "Iron Marshal", Jeff Corby, a heroic but fearsome ranger who was known for his violent methods that often left criminals dead or as close to death as he could make them.
As Corby went into town, the Longhorn Saloon's patrons instantly took notice of the Iron Marshal, as these patrons were actually members of Haddon's gang and realized that the Iron Marshal's presence would spoil their plans for Vineyard. Corby soon found out from Sheriff Smokey that Haddon was planning to kill Faro Smith, a Vineyard native who testified against him in court, but by the time he learned this it was too late, as Smith had been shot outside of town in an Ashford Stagecoach by one of the passengers. When the coach brought the wounded Smith and the suspected passengers into town, the Iron Marshal couldn't identify which one was Haddon in disguise, so he had all of the passengers moved into the Longhorn Saloon.
Once inside, the passengers refused to talk, so the Iron Marshal bought some of the saloon's tailor-made cigarettes and gave them to the tight-lipped men. Once they lit their cigarettes, the Iron Marshal was able to quickly figure out who Haddon was, with Corby having known that Haddon is an outdoor man who always cups a match to protect it from the wind.

The shootout at the Longhorn Saloon
Having been outwitted, Haddon had his undercover gang attack, beginning a huge shootout between the Haddon gang and the Iron Marshal's crew within the saloon, but they were no match for the Iron Marshal's trigger-finger, having killed and wounded Haddon's men and then knocked out Haddon himself with one punch, thus restoring order to the Longhorn Saloon and all of Vineyard.
Notes[]
- The saloon may have been based on the real Longhorn Saloon in the city of Fort Worth, Texas which was established in 1910.
