The Longhorn Saloon was a western bar featured in the 1946 comic strip series, Rip Kirby, having first appeared in the strip from November 10, 1959.
Overview[]
The Longhorn Saloon was once a popular bar in the forgotten town of Bullwhip in the American southwest, but as the decades came and the age of the old west ended, the mines of the town eventually ran dry, and the Longhorn Saloon and the town of Bullwhip fell into abandonment and disrepair, inevitably becoming a ghost town.
Although the poor saloon had seen better days, it was still thought of as a classic western bar where many a brawl had taken place.
History[]

Kirby and Desmond share an empty toast at the saloon
When famed author, pianist and criminologist, Rip Kirby, set his sights on capturing his old foe, the notorious murderer known as "The Mangler", he personally went down to The Mangler's last known location in a small town in the southwest where he met with the local chief inspector, who oriented Kirby on The Mangler's movements and killings. Wishing to confront the killer himself, Kirby asked the inspector to pinpoint him to the most ideal and isolated location where The Mangler was sure to strike, with Kirby hoping to use himself as the bait, even spreading the news that he was in the area to write a book about the law-enforcement of the old west.

Rip Kirby captures the Mangler
Kirby's plan worked, and The Mangler and his gang made their way to bullwhip where a deadly shootout erupted, with the Mangler's gang against Rip Kirby and his butler Desmond. Kirby though proved more competent, eventually subduing the Mangler's forces and taunting the rogue into a facing him. Refusing to give up so easily, The Mangler got in his car and drove it straight into the saloon, crashing through its entrance and causing a fire as engine blew. Thankfully, Rip Kirby survived and even saved the unconscious Mangler who was now in his custody, eventually being put behind bars.
Unfortunately the saloon itself along with the rest of Bullwhip was destroyed in the fire, a loss that Desmond lamented. However, Kirby reminded him that even though the town was gone, the fights between crime and law it witnessed would always be with them.
Notes[]
- The saloon may have been based on the real Longhorn Saloon in the city of Fort Worth, Texas which was established in 1910.
