The Humans or formally the Humans MC Bakersfield were an ape motorcycle charter that operated in Bakesfield, CA. They were featured in the limited comic series The Humans.
Overview[]
The Humans were a motorcycle club that headquartered at Mighty Joes Junkyard just outside Bakesfield, CA. They were an anti-establishment motorcycle sub-culture that while appearing as bikers, were actually involved in shady business ventures. Among said ventures were skin-fights (human slave fights) and drug running. For the latter they provided protection to truck rigs that transported meth across the Western Coast from Flex Trucking, a front business owned by a greedy orangutan named Abe Simian who ruled Bakesfield as the center of his criminal empire. The Humans due to their high success in getting the cargo where it needed to be, without interference from desert bandits and cops, were ranked as the top in terms of protection muscle. Due to this they earn the animosity from the Skabbs, a rival motorcycle charter that also operated in Bakersfield.
History[]
A trio of Humans composed of Karns, Marra and Mojo rode out to their gang's favorite bar Kirby's Saloon, where to their dissatisfaction found their friend Larry, being harassed by the Skabbs who wanted to crash the bar. Larry armed with his shot-gun made it clear that the hooligans were not welcomed, But as there were five of them, the bikers were not intimidated by the old orangutan. Before things got ugly for the old ape, Karns, Marra and Mojo interceded and told Larry to get inside whilst they took care of the ramble.
The two gangs eventually got into fist fight, but despite being outnumbered the Humans were superior fighters, and manhandled the Skabbs. Their fun was cut short when Bobby arrived to break it up and ordered the Skabbs to leave. Though the leader of the group of Skabbs wanted to continue to fight, Bobby knocked him unconscious leading the rest of the Skabbs to take him and split. After they left Bobby ordered his gang to wreck the bike the Skabbs left behind. Once it was done and a calling card of the Humans placed on it, he and his friends went inside Kirby's for a drink.
Not too long, a year after, Mojo suffered an accident in which his bike lost control and he rode off over a canyon, killing him. The Humans were saddened by his death and took his corpse to the cemetery to hold a funeral which then ended with a drug and alcohol party. Their reverie was interrupted by the Skabbs led by Skuz who took offense to the Humans in trespassing on his gang's turf. The confrontation between the two gangs led to a fight, but the Humans prevailed, leaving the Skabbs once again fleeing and Skuz with a broken neck.
The Humans then decided to return to their HQ to hold their final goodbyes to Mojo by making a bonfire out of his motorcycle. While hosting his wake with galleons of beer and drugs, the Humans were met with an unexpected return of Johnny Moore, back from Vietnam. The Humans were overjoyed by Johnny’s return as he was presumed dead, KIA after his helicopter crashed on a mission. The Humans then turned the party to celebrate not just Mojo’s dead but their lost brother. Although Bobby was happy to have his little brother home, he was shocked on the four outlook he had on life after his trauma in the jungles of Vietnam. Still Bobby was willing to have Johnny back in the fold and return as his second. He informed Johnny of the whereabouts of his old flame, Peggy who had left the chapter to go study at Berkeley College, though Johnny declined to reconnect with her feeling too damaged.
The next day later Johnny awoke from a severe hangover. He later met with Bobby and who took Homs to see Doc at the barn on the property of the H.Q., where they kept their skin slaves. Bobby revealed to Johnny the grand scheme he had been devising, of creating a new drug called Spazm, which he planned to market out to the West Coast, and have the Humans cut out from accepting scraps by Abe Simian and build their own drug empire.
To make Johnny feel at home again and himself, Bobby presented him with his old bike which he kept and maintained since Johnny was deployed. They took a run for old time’s sake, before meeting with Bricks, who was getting ready four skins, three males and one female, for the skin-fights at Flex Trucking.
At Flex Trucking, Bobby took Johnny and Doc to see Abe Simian who was with the leaders of the Haterz and Madfückers on a drug run. The act angered Crispin, believing he should be at the meeting since he was acting second in command since Johnny was drafted though Bobby merely punched him and ordered him to remember his place and to help Bricks and the other get their skins ready for the fights.
At the meeting, Abe had a new shipment of method he wanted to transport to L.A., and wanted the Humans to take point on protecting the goods. Bobby demanded that the Humans be given a bigger cut at 10%, an amount Abe was not willing to agree to. However to make things interesting he offered Bobby a wager if his skin could defeat his champion Bubba he would consider the 10%, which later became 15% after Bobby raised the stakes to making the Humans run protection for both departure and return trips for free.
None of the Humans skins were strong enough to defeat the giant of Bubba. So Bobby decided to put the prototype of Spazm to use by injecting one of their skins with the drug to give it an edge. The skin who was selected, and chosen by Johnny who saw a killer, was a scrawny male named Rex. Upon administering the drug to the skin, Rex became the ultimate killing machine, becoming more faster and unpredictable. He easily dominated the match against Bubba, ripping the bigger skin's jaw right off winning the fight much to the audience's shock.
After the fight, by chance Johnny met with one of Peggy's old friends, Shannon, who told him that Peggy was not in college anymore but had dropped out and no was in Oildale working as a dancer at The Forbidden Zone. She encouraged Johnny to reach out to Peggy, as she worried her friend was going on a dark path. Shortly afterwards, the Madfückers invited the Humans out to drinks to celebrate their winnings after betting on Rex.
On the L.A., Bobby and his crew traveled together with the Madfückers to Oakland, C.A. Besides conducting the deliveries at the locations to distribute Abe's product, Bobby and the Humans used the opportunity give out samples of Spazm to their allied motorcycle associations. One being Haterz who were finishing loading the meth at a pick-up off site. While they were not so keen to rip off Abe, the Hatez were willing to do business and spread the new drug around.
The Humans convoy was nearly attacked by an and of desert bandits, who were hired by Simian to kill the gang. The Humans though managed to defeat the dessert bandits and keep the cargo safe and arrive at the Madfückers H.Q. Bobby though unaware of the intended hit blamed Crispin for not spotting the desert bandits. As punishment he ordered Crispin to go with Johnny to find his ex-girlfriend Peggy at Oilsdale.
On the way there, Johnny and Crispin went their separate ways due to their dislike of each other. With Crispin growing more discontent how little his gang viewed him, and Johnny seeing him nothing as an opportunistic weasel.
Johnny would locate The Forbidden Zone and would try to wait at the strip joint for Peggy to show up. He was nearly killed after getting into an argument with some locals, though the owner of the strip club intervened and saved his life. By the time Peggy arrived for work, she was told by the manager that some ape was looking for her. At first thinking it was Bobby trying to get her out of stripping, she was shocked to see Johnny back from the dead.
Back in Bakesfield, the Humans finished their drug run and were celebrating at Kirby’s Saloon. Unknown to them Crispin secretly went to Flex Trucking and reported everything that Bobby was up to Simian. The orangutan having enough of the Humans cheating him, then ordered a hit on the Humans, sending his own apes and the Skabbs to wipe them out.
They attacked Kirby's Saloon, killing Larry, and several civilians. In the scuffle Bricks was killed and Bobby was stabbed in the back through the heart. Johnny who had been trying to rekindle his romance with Peggy arrived in the aftermath of the tragedy at Kirby's to find his brother dead and his friends in mourning.
The next day Sheriff Riggs and his Deputy Pierson arrived harassing Johnny and his friends at the Humans H.Q. for questions regarding the attack on the bar. It was of course a formality as the sheriff knew who was responsible as he worked for Simian and the investigation was merely an open taunt.
After Johnny threatened the cops to leave, he led his gang to find the Skabbs, taking them to their hideout the Links. When Skuz and his cronies refused to give a name on who ordered the hit, Johnny threw a grenade into the billiards club, killing most of the Skabbs. To the shock of the Humans, Johnny had the surviving Skabbs on their knees and forced them to confess, threatening to kill them. Skuz openly admitted to killing Bobby, gloating that he even killed Mojo and that the Humans were as good as dead. Having enough Johnny executed Skabbs and his old lady to the horror of some of the Humans, before ordering the Humans to scatter and meet up at H.Q. whilst he pursued and killed the last Skabbs.
Back at H.Q. Doc tried to urge his friends that Johnny had gone off the deep end, and was dangerous as they had committed murder. The others were not so quick to condemn Johnny as many such as Karns, Mara and Queenie felt their actions were justified. Johnny soon arrived to the secret meeting, and while he was angry he did not deny that Doc was not right about him. He made it clear that he planned to kill Simian and all his cronies for what they did to their friends, an action that was supported by all the gang save for Doc.
Peggy horrified by all this tried to convince Johnny not to go through with this as she did not want to lose him to revenge. However Johnny seeing himself as a monster and a lost cause was determined to avenge Bibby, willing to end his life. Because of this lack of concern for her feelings and his own life, Peggy left him, seeing that he was a sad and pitiful ape who lost the will to live.
Doc was disappointed by these turn of events and tried one more time to convince Johnny to not take this path. However he too was refused and ordered to stay behind from the upcoming battle against Flex Trucking. Doc was hurt thinking Johnny was kicking him out of the Humans for speaking against him. Though Johnny revealed that was never the case, as Doc was always a Human through and through. His exclusion from the attack was out of genuine concern for Doc as the orangutan was already getting old and not much use in a fight, more likely he would be killed. Johnny not wanting to be responsible for Doc's death or his brother Clyde, refused to lose them. He gave Doc the last job of burning down the Humans' compound. Once that was done Doc would take Clyde and the two would become nomads, fleeing north to San Francisco.
Doc emotionally touched, teared at this and while he did not want his friend to go to his death agreed to follow Johnny's last orders. As part of the plan to attack Flex Trucking, Doc provided Johnny will all the dosages of spazm. The rest of the Humans then rode on their bikes bringing them a cartload of their skins.
At night they attacked Flex Trucking, guarded by corrupt cops and security guards under Simian's payroll. Though the place was a fortress, the Humans surprised the Flex Trucking forces, by using their skins as cannon fodder, after giving them injections of spazm that turned them into berserkers. With the skins running as distraction on the front gate, Johnny and his apes destroyed it with a grenade, allowing for them and their slaves to penetrate the facility's defenses.
The goons hired by Simian began to take heavy losses from the feral skins and attacking Humans. Sheriff Riggs seeing the war at the front gate made the call to request back-up from the state police, which Simian objected as it would bring the law onto him, but his concern was ignored by Riggs as he was only focused on stopping this mayhem. Crispin who was hiding with Simian in fear of his life, pleaded for the orangutan to protect him, but he was discarded by Simian via his Japanese ape bodyguard.
A final showdown saw Riggs facing against Queenie who she killed with her own hands, and Karns butchering Simian's bodyguard. Crispin and Simian were eventually captured by Johnny and reserved for a special type of death. By then most of the skins had been killed, save for Florence and Rex. The two having regained their senses from the drug injected in their bodies, took the opportunity to escape the senseless bloodshed. At the urging of Florence, the female skin, led Rex away from the battlefield, their departure noticed by a hiding Pierson. However he was corned by the female apes of the Humans, who attempted to kill the cop, but found themselves totally inept at killing, only managing to shoot the ape in the arms, legs and crotch. By then Pierson pleaded for a gunshot to the head, only to be denied this after the she-apes found they had no more bullets.
As for Simian and Crispin, they awoke to find their arms and legs tied to motorcycles. Despite their pleading Johnny had them drawn and quarter, pulling their limbs apart as Karns and him, bisected the two apes with swords. After the deed, Johnny ordered everyone to flee and try to get help from the Madfückers. Not all could escape as Mara had been gravely injured in the fight, and there were not enough bikes to get them all out. Johnny ordered Queenie to escape with Karns, while he stayed with Mara when the state cops arrived. He was joined by Nada who wanted to stay by his friends. The three apes then shared a joint together as the police came guns drawn. Despite being unarmed they were gunned down by the cops after being goaded by Johnny. In spite of everything Johnny miraculously survived. And later it’s confirmed that Mara and Nada also survived and the three were sent to Sunvalley Correctional.
While most of the Humans had scattered and became fugitives, a happy ending is found among their former slaves. Elsewhere some distance away from Flex Trucking, Florence and Rex had successfully reached a nearby forest. In celebration of their newfound freedom from their ape masters, Florence and Rex mated with one another. According to the author's note the two having reached the wilds lived happily ever after.
