- “I am a fine shoemaker. A first classy gobbler!”
- ―G.W. Geezil, founder
Geezil's is an opportunistic shoe cobbling business operated by the eponymous George W. Geezil who is always looking for new business venture opportunities wherever they may arise, especially when they involve his long time acquaintance, the famous Popeye the Sailor. It is prominently featured in the 1919 comic strip series Thimble Theatre Starring Popeye and the subsequent Popeye the Sailor comic book series, with Geezil's cobbling business making its debut in the 1933 strips and frequently changing in service since then.
Overview[]
George W. Geezil originally began as a humble shoe cobbler from the strange kingdom of Nazillia (later known as Spinachovia) but seeking greater riches, he made his way overseas and established a new shoe cobbling shop in an unassuming port town (later known as Sweethaven) near the Rough House Cafe where Mr. Geezil would remain ever since to make or repair shoes for many of the town's denizens, a service which Mr. Geezil in his rather distorted dialect would refer to as "shoe gobbling". In the years that followed though, Mr. Geezil saw a new business opportunity arise when local sailor Popeye planned an expedition to the dangerous realm of Plunder Island where treasure was abound, with Mr. Geezil quickly offering his services as a sailing cobbler to Popeye's crew in exchange for a cut of the treasure, a deal which was honored by Popeye.
Following their successful adventure at Plunder Island and their conquest of the legendary Sea Hag, Geezil would go on to expand his business, abandoning the life of a shoe cobbling to eventually opening his own cafe right next to the Rough House Cafe, however this business venture would prove rather unsuccessful, especially due in part to the mooching ways of Mr. Geezil's longtime apathetic nemesis and Popeye's friend J. Wellington Wimpy. Mr. Geezil would eventually try again, eventually opening a full seafood restaurant down by pier which proved a modest success, but was once again mired by difficulties caused by Mr. Wimpy.

G.W. Geezil's booby-trapped estate
Despite these shortcomings, Mr. Geezil has managed to make a modest fortune for himself which has allowed him to obtain his own small but impressive estate complete with a manor and butler, a fortune which has also likely helped to keep him afloat even when his businesses fall flat. Over his long career, Mr. Geezil has attempted various other business ventures, becoming a merchant of general goods, clothing, foods, meats, knickknacks or anything else that he hoped could make him more successful, but he usually ends up right back to shoe cobbling or being a restaurateur while sulking away to his usual routine of sipping soup at the Rough House Cafe while cursing the day that J. Wellington Wimpy was ever born.

George W. Geezil, resentful founder of G. Geezil Enterprises
George W. Geezil is the temperamental founder of his namesake enterprise and a proud shoe cobbler who has been in business for well over 10 years. Geezil is a native of the kingdom of Nazillia/Spinachovia (as noted by his very thick accent), having left his homeland to find his fortune overseas by starting his own shoe cobbling shop where he has serviced many women and sailors alike.
Mr. Geezil is a man of consistent habit and has followed the same routine everyday for 10 years, which usually involves waking up, going to work, eating a bowl of soup at the Rough House Cafe, insulting Rogue House's cooking, and then arguing with his longtime foe J. Wellington Wimpy to the point where the two may even try to casually murder each other over nonsensical reasons. Mr. Geezil is greedy by nature and is always looking to find new ways to make a profit when not finding new ways to murder Wimpy, and aside from investing in various business ventures, Mr. Geezil is even willing to offer his services to his acquaintance Popeye the Sailor on his adventures so long as he gets a cut of any treasure they find.
Employees[]

Geezil's "very best" waitress
Mr. Geezil is not one to hire help for his businesses, usually preferring to manage his shops by himself as a sole proprietorship. The one time he did however take on a full staff was when he started his own seafood restaurant which was fully staffed with waitresses and chefs, with one waitress in particular, who Mr. Geezil considered his "very best", being reserved for who he considered to be only the most distinguished of sailors who visited his restaurant. Outside of his businesses though, Mr. Geezil employs a single lone butler by the name of Jeeves to help run his estate when he's not at home.

Geezil the Shoe Cobbler[]
"Geezil the Shoe Cobbler" was Mr. Geezil's original and main business operation where he offered his shoemaking and "gobbling" services to customers by making and fitting them with his custom made shoes as well as repairing shoes for many locals. Ironically enough, Mr. Geezil was rarely ever seen actually doing his job, usually spending most of his time at the Rough House Cafe just to complain about all the things and people (specifically Wimpy) that made his life intolerable.
However, Mr. Geezil would one day put his "shoe gobbling" skills to the test when he overheard Popeye the Sailor discussing his journey to the perilous Plunder Island, home of the evil Sea Hag and her horde of treasure. Upon learning of this adventure, Mr. Geezil immediately offered his services to Popeye and his comrades, hoping to join the crew of The Olive as their official shoe cobbler, an offer which Popeye happily accepted, but upon arriving to Popeye's ship, Geezil found himself face-to-face once again with his archenemy J. Wellington Wimpy, which made Geezil promptly pack his things and jump into the ocean, preferring to drown himself than journey with his burger-loving nemesis, but unfortunately for Mr. Geezil, he was rescued by his peers and he would go on to carry out his duties for the crew throughout most of their adventure on Plunder Island.

Mr. Geezil, shoe "gobbler" and treasure hunter for the crew of The Olive
By the end of their journey and the crew's victory over the Sea Hag, Mr. Wimpy would divvy up the spoils and unsurprisingly, he attempted to abscond with most of the treasure while leaving an infuriated Geezil a miserably tiny bag of silver coins for his efforts, but fortunately, Wimpy was put in his place and the treasure was divvied up accordingly, allowing Mr. Geezil to pursue new business ventures in the future.
Geezil's Cafe[]
Geezil's Cafe (aka Geezil's Eats) was Geezil's first known eatery, having opened his own cafe adjacent to the Rough House Cafe in the hopes of increasing his profits while also serving as a form of protest towards the food and service at Rough House's which Geezil considered to be less than stellar.
The Geezil Cafe was mostly a burger joint and offered much of the same menu that was available at the Rough House Cafe, however Geezil's food was notably not as appetizing and things became all the more difficult when his arch foe Wimpy showed up to mooch off of Mr. Geezil, a fact which angered Geezil to no end and was made all the more irksome by the fact that any attempt to get rid of Wimpy resulted in what few customers Geezil did get becoming disgusted at his harsh behavior towards Wimpy, with Geezil's defenses usually falling on deaf ears. In the end, even Mr. Geezil himself couldn't enjoy his own soup at his restaurant and eventually caved in and began eating at the Rough House Cafe again while continuing to complain about it. From there he would close down his cafe in order to open a seafood restaurant.

Geezil's Eats (Popeye the Sailor, Issue #116)
At a later period after those events, Mr. Geezil went on a 5 year trip away from home but did eventually return and re-opened his old Rough House-adjacent cafe as a full restart business under the new name of Geezil's Eats, but unfortunately Wimpy once again made his way back into Geezil's life to pester him once more, motivating Mr. Geezil to buy a gorilla and have it do away with Wimpy once and for all, but unfortunately for Mr. Geezil, his plans were thwarted by Wimpy's friend Popeye who bested the beast, leaving the moocher to mooch another day... and so he did, as Wimpy did eventually return to the Geezil Cafe requesting free hamburgers in exchange for swatting any flies that pestered Geezil, but Wimpy's reckless swatting ended up destroying the already struggling cafe, leaving it in ruins, forcing Mr. Geezil to once again return to the Rough House Cafe in defeat, but not before slyly tricking Rough House into letting Wimpy swat flies at his restaurant as well.
Mr. Geezil would not concede though, as he would eventually go on to open a new restaurant in a more isolated location.

Geezil's Seafood Place by the Sea[]
Geezil's Seafood Place by the Sea (or Geezil's Seafood Cafe for short) was Geezil's second attempt at breaking into the restaurant business, and unlike his previous cafe actually proved more successful, the only problem was the constant pestering he received from his meddlesome foe Wimpy the moocher who always came around trying to get free burgers from Geezil despite that his new restaurant did not even serve burgers (which was his main reason for switching to a seafood-only menu), and any attempts to try and get rid of Wimpy would usually result in Geezil looking like a rude host in front of customers unfamiliar with Wimpy's shenanigans.

This would force Geezil to turn his restaurant into a sailor-only establishment so as to keep Wimpy out, but as usual, Wimpy simply borrowed a sailor's uniform and made his way in regardless only to ask for burgers once again which quickly gave him away, much to Geezil's rage and dismay who at this point would rather just go out of business than continue putting up with Wimpy's nonsense.

G. Geezil Furs[]
G. Geezil Furs was a clothing outlet owned by Mr. Geezil which dealt exclusively in fur-made apparel at outrageously high prices.

Geezil's showing off his wares to Popeye
On one particular day, Mr. Geezil's old friend Popeye had come around his little shop looking for a bear-skin coat to give to his sweetheart Olive Oyl as a birthday present, however when Geezil presented his "finest" bear-skin coat to Popeye, he quickly took notice that it was in fact a rabbit-skin coat. A seemingly offended Mr. Geezil angrily rebuffed Popeye's claim and swore that his coats were all genuine lest his store's ceiling fall down on him... which it did, destroying much of the shop. A disgruntled Geezil then told Popeye to go shoot his own bear, which Popeye did in fact decide to do, but not before Geezil attempted to sell Popeye a hunting outfit.
Popeye would later succeed in tracking down a bear and depriving it of its fur coat, but upon inspecting the coat more closely, Popeye realized that the bear had in fact been wearing one of Mr. Geezil's own cheaply made furs all along.
Geezil's Restaurant[]
Geezil's Restaurant was the successor to Geezil's Cafe, with Mr. Geezil having established his new business in the outskirts of town in order to get further away from Wimpy. However, his efforts proved fruitless as Mr. Wimpy continued to hound Mr. Geezil for free hamburgers, a fact which was made things all the more difficult for Geezil due to that he hardly ever received any new customers, making Wimpy his only regular. Things eventually got so bad between Geezil and Wimpy that Geezil was forced to flat out abandon his restaurant and fled to a desert in the middle of nowhere to set up a new stand for his restaurant, knowing that it might ruin his business but at least it would get him far away from Wimpy... or so he thought, for Wimpy soon arrived as if from nowhere to demand a free hamburger, much to Mr. Geezil's misfortune.
Mr. Geezil would eventually return to town after his fruitless departure, but on one fateful day though, after Geezil had been particularly harsh on Wimpy especially after the latter unexpectedly referred to him as a "friend", Mr. Geezil became so overwhelmed with guilt that he decided to prepare a special giant hamburger just for Wimpy, but unfortunately Geezil's hamburger meat was so rotten that he attempted to mask the smell with limburger cheese and onions, creating an even more ghastlier odor which even drove away all skunks the area. The following day, a hazmat-equipped Geezil served his repugnant giant hamburger to Wimpy who much to his shock ate it all with ease and actually liked it, with his only complaint being that it needed more salt, causing a shocked Mr. Geezil to pass out.

Geezil Meats[]
Geezil Meats was a small butcher shop owned by Mr. Geezil and located near Mr. Wimpy's rooming house.
Unfortunately, because of the butcher shop's close proximity to Wimpy's semi-regular place of residence, the infamous moocher would make a habit of regularly visiting Geezil Meats almost every day at 1:05PM during the time it was in business, causing no end of headaches for Mr. Geezil and his victimized meats.
Geezil's Grocery Stand[]
Geezil's Grocery Stand was a small little vegetable stand at the port of Sweethaven where Mr. Geezil sold a variety of fresh vegetables and canned goods for the locals of the town, unfortunately for his customers though, Mr. Geezil had a habit of constantly gouging his prices or even haggling for higher prices as his customers asked for what they want or even forcing them to buy what he thought best solely based around his mood.
Popeye the sailor himself once had the ill luck of having to buy carrots from Mr. Geezil when arriving at Sweethaven who was quick to try and sell Popeye overpriced veggies, but a stern Popeye didn't yield and gave Geezil ¢5 for his bushel of carrots.

Geezil's Ship[]
Geezil's Ship was George W. Geezil's private sailing vessel for a boating service he had opened later in his life around the time of Popeye and Olive's wedding.
Mr. Geezil had experienced difficulties protecting his boat from the constant pestering of Mr. Wimpy around this time as he had set up several signs warning Wimpy to stay clear away from his precious boat. Unfortunately, they proved to be of no avail, as Wimpy had absconded with Mr. Geezil's ship and offered it to Popeye to use on his journey to rescue Olive Oyl from the clutches of Bluto and his crew one last time, leaving a disgruntled Mr. Geezil to sulk.
Fortunately, Mr. Geezil's ship would return unharmed after the journey was over.
George W. Geezil Promotions[]
George W. Geezil Promotions was Mr. Geezil's own advertising agency, although he mostly used it to produce posters and ads to promote his own business ventures, all of which Mr. Geezil just drew himself.
Mr. Geezil had notably used his agency to help promote a special boxing match he had orchestrated as a challenge against his long-time nemesis J. Wellington Wimpy, but Mr. Geezil had no intention of fighting Wimpy himself, instead his intent was to have Wimpy fight Geezil's new boxing subordinate "The Phantom Crusher", a hulking behemoth of a man who Mr. Geezil hoped would crush Wimpy to a pulp and finally end his life, even coaxing Wimpy to battle him with the promise of hamburgers. Geezil's ambitions almost became reality when the Phantom Crusher nearly put Wimpy's lights out, but thanks to some last minute help from Wimpy's good friend Popeye, both were able to best the Crusher and reveal that he was in fact just a trained horse in disguise. A humiliated Mr. Geezil was then forced to wallow in defeat and abandoned his horse which was then taken in by Mr. Wimpy who then traded it away for some cows he would later grind into beef.
